Match Summary:- The Sports returned from Essex with all 3 points after an excellent performance in the first away game of the new season. There were 2 changes to the starting 11 from the home victory over Yeading. Jiri Dohnal made his competitive debut for Boro at right back and Duncan McArthur also made his debut at left wing replacing Saturdays 2 goal hero Matt Crabb.
Boro made the dream start on 4 minutes when Jiri clipped the ball forward to Allan Tait. Evidence of a growing understanding between the 2 strikers was in evidence as Tait flicked the ball onto Ramsay who having spotted the advancing keeper clipped the ball over King into the net - 1-0. Allan Tait had a chance to get on the score sheet himself 3 minutes later but could only direct his header wide. He did however open his account for the club on 13 minutes when he dispossessed the Thurrock keeper and rolled the ball home for a 2-0 scoreline. The first 25minutes was all Boro and the away side were soon 3-0 up as a Duncan McArthur corner dropped to Tait inside the 6 yard box for a simple tap-in.
It was only now that Thurrock appeared to get a hold on the game. The home side made 2 substitutions and enjoyed some fine possession but without causing much concern in the Boro defence. Indeed the final minutes of the half saw 2 further chances for The Sports, with Smart and McArthur setting up Ramsay twice but King saved well on both occasions.
The opening moments of the 2nd half saw Thurrock putting pressure on Boro but Ramsay grabbed his 2nd on 54 minutes. A fantastic flowing move involving Jay Lovett and Allan Tait allowed Paul Armstrong to bend the ball around the Thurrock defence into the path of the Boro no.9. Scott made no mistake and The Sports were 4 up. It appeared if no. 5 was not far away as a McArthur corner again dropped into the Thurrock 6 yard box but this time the finishing touch was missing. Thurrock cleared and broke with pace down the right wing. Captain Steve Harper crossed and Wes Thomas applied a clinical finish to pull a goal back for The Fleet.
The game became a far more even affair midway through the 2nd half with chances for both sides but Thurrock pulled another back after 77 minutes. A corner was not cleared and McKenzie scored with a strong header. Scott Ramsay had a chance for a hat-trick 7 minutes from time but King saved well with his feet. The game then drew to a close with a couple of Thurrock half chances missed resulting in the final score - Thurrock 2, Boro 4.
