Match Summary:-
Eastbourne Borough traveled to Surrey on a beautiful Spring afternoon hoping to maintain their long unbeaten run. The side gave their all as individuals and as a team, played by far the best football on offer on the day, but some route 1 football from the hosts and multiple missed opportunities in front of goal saw the side drop 3 points in the close season run in.

Scott Ramsay appealed for a penalty in the 1st minute as he was bundled over in the area but the referee ignored him. Ramsay then headed on a long ball to strike partner Allan Tait inside 10 minutes. Taits shot was on target but scuffed and Wilson in the United goal gathered easily. Tait was then provided with another opportunity after a poor defensive header. His shot from the right hand angle of the 18 yard box was unfortunately inches wide of the near post. Sutton looked to play the ball forward at the earliest opportunity. The strong Warren McBean and the tricky and skillful Jason Henry the targets. Adam Wilde and Pat Harding had chances to hit the target around the 20 minute mark but Wilson was not seriously troubled from either player. Harding turned provider moments later as a fantastic right-wing cross found Ramsay at the near post. Scott could not control his effort and the ball flew over the bar, again the Sutton keeper not worked by Boro efforts on goal.

Despite barely leaving their half Sutton took the lead on 25 minutes. Another long clearance found Henry. His good turn and control wrong footed the Boro defence and his effort from outside the box beat Lee hook at his right-hand post for 1-0. Three minutes later the home side extended their lead as Boro failed to clear their lines Hook saved a 1st shot on goal but the Sutton No.11 slipped the rebound past the Boro keeper for number 2.

On 31 minutes Boro had a 2nd penalty appeal dismissed as Tait beat the Sutton defence attempting to see the ball out for a goal-kick. As Allan attempted to turn inside the defender simply pushed him over. Rather inexplicably the referee awarded a free-kick to Sutton. Just prior to half-time Hook was required to make a 2 point blank saves to prevent his side slipping further behind but the players made their way to the dressing room 2 down.

'The Sports' came out in the 2nd half playing as creatively as they did in the 1st and within 5 minutes had pulled a goal back. A fabulous goal-bound effort was deflected out for a corner and as Sutton failed to clear Allan Tait turned a low cross into the net from 3 yards.

Tait tested Wilson again on 57 minutes after being set away by Ben Austin and Jay Lovett was unlucky not to turn the ball home at the left-hand post as Boro chased the equaliser. Boro laid siege to the Sutton goal and the home defence defended bravely throwing bodies into blocks when needed. The pressure left the visitors exposed to quick breaks and Hook saved from Henry on 71 minutes. Harding and Tait came close to pulling Boro back onto level terms but on 80 minutes 'Sports' old boy John Scarborough thundered in a header from a left wing corner to take the game beyond his old side, 3-1 the final score.
