Match Summary:- Salisbury City arrived in Sussex after a fine win away at Fisher Athletic the previous Saturday to book a place in the 1st Round proper of the F.A Cup. With a return to league action they were looking to continue an excellent run of form that saw The Whites sitting comfortably in 2nd place in the Conference South and having lost only 2 all season.
The match licked off in bright sunshine and an early Adam Wilde corner flew across the Salisbury box, no Boro striker could apply a finish for an early lead. Salisbury responded positively and broke with the home side thanking Marc Pullan for a brave tackle striker preventing an attempt on goal. On 13 minutes Wilde played a superb long ball over the City defence for Pat Harding to collect. He provided an excellent ball back across the 18yard box for eventual MOM Paul Armstrong but his shot was wide of the mark. Jay Lovett had a fine game and he provided several balls across the Salisbury box in the 1st half from the right wing, but they all managed to evade the vital finish. Wilde provided excellent corners all match and on 41 minutes the ball again needed a finish, another chance went begging. As the half finished Ben Austin had a shot deflected over the bar and the excellent Ryan Clarke tipped Armstrongs long-range effort over the bar.
The 2nd half saw the home side pick up where they left off and Clarke saved a Scott Ramsay header on 46 minutes. A minute later Salisbury were in the Boro half and as they broke forward a fine goal bound effort was deflected for a corner. Eastbourne Borough were having a strong game and as the resolute Salisbury defence failed to clear on 66 minutes Harding lobbed a shot onto the bar with Clarke beaten for the 1st time. Harding had a 2nd chance to open the scoring when played through by Lovett. Unfortunately the ball got caught under his feet and the Salisbury defence recovered to clear. Austin was having a good game from right back, bursting forward when possible, and just such a run drew another excellent save as a low drive was tipped round the post for yet another Sports corner. Allan Tait and Matt Crabb replaced Harding and Wilde and had an immediate impact as Ramsay drew a further save after excellent play from Crabb and Tait. In the final minutes the game saw Boro centre-back Darren Baker receive a straight red card and Tubbs receive a red for his 2nd yellow following a clash in the middle of the park. Garry Wilsons substitutions then produced the best possible result as in time added on Ramsay provided the pass for Tait to fire past Clarke for what was a deserved winner for the home side. Final score Boro 1, City 0.
