Match Summary:-

The Sports kicked off their pre-season program with the customary fixture .v. Horsham on the warmest day of the year, handing debuts to all the close season signings bar an injured Duncan McArthur.

Scott R Vs HorshamBoro kicked up the Queen Street slope in the first half and the first 10 minutes provided evidence that the match would be played in a competitive spirit with players on both sides appearing to be eager to impress coaches and supporters alike. Matt Crabb provided the first real chance for the away side with a deep cross that saw Scott Ramsay climb for the header and challenge the keeper, unfairly in the referees judgment. Neil Jenkins also began to make his presence felt from left back and provided an excellent opportunity for Ramsay to cross only for the striker to bend the ball out with no opportunity for a team mate to attack the ball.

If the first 15 minutes saw Boro pushing forward Horsham responded with a period of their own dominance, John Westcott providing the best moments for the home side. However The Sports created an excellent chance when a Crabb corner arrived with Ben Austin rather unexpectedly and the Boro defender could only manage to deflect the ball over the bar.

Marc Pullan was withdrawn injured on 28 minutes. Ben Austin switched to centre-back, Kevin Hemsley slotted in at right-back. Horsham continued to pressure the visitors but on 36 minutes the home side failed to clear their lines after a Boro free-kick and as the ball broke to Austin on the edge of the 18 yd box his goal bound shot was well saved by the keeper, tipped over for a corner.

As the half drew to a close Horsham had their best opportunity. As a Boro attack broke down Horsham counter attacked quickly down the hill and drew a great save from Lee Hook. As the ball broke free Ben Austin was called upon to charge on a goal bound effort and concede a corner.

Ben A and Scott R v HorshamThe second half saw Horsham make a couple of changes but Boro went on to set the pace with Matt Crabb firing over and the lively Lee Newman creating an opportunity for Jay Lovett.

The only goal of the game came after 60 minutes when a Crabb cross was met powerfully by Scott Ramsay 6 yds out. Despite pressure from the Horsham back line the header was planted firmly past the stranded keeper. A few minutes later the favour was almost returned as a Ramsay header set up Crabb but he could not control his shot and his effort was over the bar.

Although competitive all over the park Horsham produced little danger to Lee Hook's clean sheet and the Boro substitutions on 65 minutes provided fresh purpose to the sides attacks. Tom Moffatt was linking well with Neil Jenkins and the new strike partnership of Tait and Harding provided several goal scoring opportunities. Indeed Pat Harding almost marked his debut with a goal as he showed strength in the Horsham penalty area to hold off his marker, turn and shoot, but his shot brushed the far post and out for a goal kick.

The end of the game allowed all to reflect on a competitive work-out under extreme conditions which no doubt will assist in preparation for the coming season.
