Match Summary:- Eastbourne Borough travelled to the league leaders with a squad limited by injuries and suspension but returned to the Sussex coast with a hard fought for but ultimately well deserved 3 points. Injuries to Matt Smart and Paul Armstrong provided Gary Wilson and Nick Greenwood the opportunity to pair Joe Keehan and Andy Atkin in the centre of midfield, and Duncan McArthur's suspension and Matt Crabb's continuing absence allowed Pat Harding a wide left berth.
Histon had an opportunity in the 1st minute to open the scoring but Lee Hooks save allowed Boro to start a period of early domination. Neil Jenkins and Pat Harding were rampant in the 1st 10 minutes with both players testing Key in the Histon goal and providing crosses for Tait and Ramsay. Jay Lovett also got in on the act from the right flank but Allan Tait could not keep his header down and on target on 8 minutes. He was presented with a further opportunity on 10 minutes when he received Pat Harding's cross in the 18 yard box and executed a clever turn only for his goal bound effort to be blocked by committed Histon defending.
Histon thought they had opened the scoring on 11 minutes when a left wing cross was delivered into the Boro box. The Sports struggled to clear and as the ball dropped a 1st time shot was despatched into the net. However, Boros struggle was due to an infringement in the box and the referee had blown for an away free kick well before the ball hit the net. This preceded a short spell of Histon pressure but crosses were dealt with by the excellent centre-back pairing of Marc Pullan and Darren Baker and any shots were generally wide of the target. On 14 minutes Boro opened the scoring. A Lee Hook free kick was flicked on by Scott Ramsay to Jay Lovett wide right. Jay turned to face his marker and in beating him made his way into the 18 yard box. With several defenders still to beat Jay angled a low shot to the far left hand post. The shot, whilst not powerful was clever and accurate, and must have caught the Histon keeper unaware as he made no attempt to dive as the ball bent into the net at the far post. 1-0 The Sports
Histon responded to this set back and the game became a more even affair for the rest of the half. Histon appealed for a hand-ball penalty on 21 minutes and a committed block by Marc Pullan was needed on 30 minutes to prevent a goal bound shot, but it was Boro who extended their lead on 42 minutes. An inch perfect Joe Keehan pass set Scott Ramsay free down the right wing. He played the ball past the Histon defender who was left on the grass, and turned into the 18 yard box. He drove the ball across the box and Pat Harding arrived on cue to slide in, beat his marker to the ball, and finish an excellent Boro move. 2-0 Boro. The 2 goal cushion was short lived unfortunately as 2 minutes later a free kick to the far left hand post found the Histon captain un-marked and he fired past Lee Hook at the near post to pull a goal back and set-up a tense 2nd half.
Histon had most of the play for the 1st 10 minutes of the 2nd half but the Boro goal was not seriously threatened and again crosses and shots were dealt with comfortably. After weathering this period Boro again began to pressure the Histon goal. Great work on the left by Pat Harding saw a ball delivered to Andy Atkin in the box. He turned and shot but the defender had tracked his run and blocked his shot well. Joe Keehan was having a fine game in midfield and contributed to attack and defence all day. His defensive qualities were needed on 61 minutes with a fine tackle breaking down a Histon attack. He found Scott Ramsay who broke forward and his cross found Tait on the edge of the 6 yard box but he headed over under pressure. Pat Harding and Allan Tait next combined to free Scott Ramsay but the through ball was just to long and Key advanced to well outside his area to clear. The rest of the half saw Histon delivering long balls into the Boro defence in an effort to provide an opportunity to level, and they had several chances, but they found a back 5 in no mood to let the points slip and Lee Hook made several excellent saves in normal time and in the 5 minutes of added to keep the score 2-1 to The Sports.
