Match Summary:-
Eastbourne Borough are not to repeat the feat of last season and an appearance in the 1st round proper as the club crashed out of the F.A. Cup at Ridgeons League 1 side Haverhill Rovers.

New signing Adam Wilde started on the bench but Boro had an early opportunity to take a lead as Andy Atkin forced his way into the box and poked the loose ball goal wards. Benstead saved, as he did on several occasions during a frustrating afternoon for The Sports. Haverhill had an early penalty appeal waved away by the referee on 8 minutes as the home striker was bundled off the ball and a lobbed shot 9 minutes later initially troubled Lee Hook after a poorly executed free kick. Haverhill again appealed for a penalty as a cross from the left struck Paul Armstrong on the arm but the Boro captain was well outside the area and a freekick was delivered into a dangerous area and defended well by the away defence. The rest of the 1st half saw The Sports attacking on a difficult pitch but half-chances for Scott Ramsay and Paul Armstrong were not taken. As the half drew to a close there were clear chances for Allan Tait and Pat Harding but Benstead was up to the challenge on both occasions saving well.

Haverhill started the 2nd half brightly but although their approach play was good there was never a stern test for Hook. On 63 minutes Scott Ramsay had an excellent shot deflected and the resulting corner saw the ball drop to Marc Pullan who's shot from the edge of the 18 yard box was blocked by some resolute defending. A Duncan McArthur freekick almost found Ben Austin free in the 6 yard box in the 84th minute but an injury time freekick ultimately proved to be Boro's undoing. Duncan McArthur was adjudged to have fouled a breaking Haverhill player 30 yards out. The freekick was swung towards the back post and dropped invitingly for Shaw who despatched the ball past Hook with a firm strike.
