Match Summary:- Eastbourne Borough travelled to West Leigh park hoping to stop a run of visits to The Hawks where defeat by the odd goal appear to be the norm. This season was to prove no different unfortunately as The Sports lost to 2-1. Injuries and suspension saw Andy Atkin play as centre-back and Jay Lovett cover Ben Austin at right-back. Allan Tait partnered Scott Ramsay up front with Pat Harding moving to wide right.
The visitors kicked up the hill and Havant made good use of the slope to dominate for most of the 1st half. Taggart wasted a chance for the hosts early in the game and Tait returned the favour soon after after being set through on goal by Harding. Harding had a chance himself on 17 minutes but when 7 yards out he had to lift the ball off the ground and turn and volley. the move was well executed but straight at The Hawks keeper. Richard Pacquette had a chance on 25 minutes after Marc Pullan slipped but the ball arriving at his feet surprised the ex-Worthing striker and his shot was wayward over the bar. Havant took the lead on 28 minutes when a right-wing corner was knocked beyond the far post. Pacquette had moved beyond the 6 yard box, collected the loose ball, turned and fired past Lee Hook at his near post. Havant continued to push down the hill and had several chances to extend their lead. Boro were not without opportunities themselves. Tait and Paul Armstrong both lifted shots over the bar without troubling Gore in the Havant goal, and Gore was called on to save bravely at the feet of Neil Jenkins after an excellent ball from Adam Wilde just as the half ended.
The hosts made a good start to the 2nd half and Hook had to make an excellent save to deny the Hawks on 51 minutes. Boro fought their way back into the match and Jay Lovett began to produce some trademark crosses from the right. One such cross was met by Ramsay but his header was inches over with the keeper beaten. Ramsay almost turned provider when a knock down header was met by Armstrong breaking from midfield. His 1st time effort was unfortunately for The Sports high and over the bar. Havant were still pushing to extend their lead and Taggart mysteriously failed to get his shot away with only Hook to beat yards from goal, the Boro defence getting back in time to force the ball to safety. The lead was extended on 76 minutes when another corner was not cleared and Tom Jordan eventually took advantage to nod the ball home - 2-0 to Havant & Waterlooville. The Sports had threatened an equaliser and the 2nd goal appeared to only inspire the side further with the last 15 minutes producing chances for Ramsay, Pullan, an indirect free-kick in the Havant 18 yard box, and a clearance off the line before Wilde was fouled in the box for Ramsay to fire home the penalty. This was the last kick of the game and Boro returned home ruing missed chances and strange refereeing decisions for off the ball incidents. Credits:- Match details and summary supplied by Webmaster.
