Match Summary:-
Eastbourne Borough moved comfortably into the next round of the FA Trophy, with a competent display against Southern Premier Division club Gloucester City.
After the frustration of a postponed game the previous Saturday, there was much relief at Priory Lane when Gloucester officials declared the pitch fit and the match on! But it was the home fans who were first to celebrate after only four minutes, as Borough keeper Lee Hook was caught in two minds when confronted with a 30 yard effort from Gloucester's Michael Whittington, with Hook pushing the ball over his own head and into the net. At this point, the travelling Borough supporters may have been concerned that a repeat of the FA Cup humiliation was on the cards, but fears were soon alleviated as Pat Harding levelled the scores on 18 minutes, converting a ball delivered from the right, and the same player put Borough ahead six minutes later with a well struck shot.
Borough were playing with confidence and were always a pace ahead of the opposition, and it came as no shock when Allan Tait increased the lead on 34 minutes, with a perfectly struck effort that went inside the far post with City keeper Matt Bath unsighted. Despite several days of rain, the pitch stood up well, with Borough using the flanks as they constantly forged forward.
With a 3-1 half-time advantage, Borough came out for the second period looking for more goals and it took only 45 seconds before Scott Ramsay put his name on the score sheet as he ran on to a defence splitting ball and finished clinically with his left foot. But, Gloucester refused to lay down and reduced the arrears on 62 minutes when Aaron Wilson's looping cross from the right touchline evaded the Borough defence and sailed over Lee Hook's head and into the far corner. Nine minutes later Ramsay forced his way through the City defence, once again, to help his side regain a three goal lead, rounding the keeper and holding off challenges as the ball crossed the line. There was still time for Harding to crash a shot against the Gloucester crossbar, but this time the ball rebounded out of play.
As final whistle approached there was a skirmish on the half-way line, following a heavy tackle by substitute Matt Crabb, who was shown a straight red card, but this did not overshadow a committed performance by Eastbourne Borough.
