Match Summary:-
Eastbourne Borough travelled to South London for an early kick-off on a Sunday afternoon with thoughts turning to pitch conditions after heavy rain in the South of England and a stadium hosting it's 2nd game in 24 hours. Arrival at 'Champion Hill' revealed a near perfect surface and 'The Sports' took full advantage by opening the scoring inside the 1st minute. Scott Ramsay laid the ball into the path of Pat Harding playing wide right. His low cross across the penalty area was blocked by a Fisher defender only for Matt Smart to pick up the clearance and strike a fierce shot past Paul Nicholls to the far left hand corner. The away side 1 up.
The match was obviously going to be keenly contested and Boro thought they had scored again when Andy Atkin, Ramsays strike partner for the day, hooked a Ramsay header into the net after 6 minutes. The whistle had gone however. Scott was adjudged to have committed a foul whilst teeing up Atkin.
Despite early pressure and the early goal it was obvious that Fisher were more than in the game and a failed clearance after 12 minutes saw a shot across Lee Hooks goal but wide of his left hand post. Atkin was having a excellent game and his through ball set Ramsay in on goal on the quarter hour mark. Scott's attempted to lift the ball over the advancing keeper but Phillips saved only for the clearance to fall to Smart who's shot evaded the keeper and struck the post. The rebound fell to the Boro goal scorer again but this time his shot was high over the bar.
Fisher were competitive all over that park but were finding the Boro defence in no mood to let the lead slip. Shots were mostly forced from distance and Hook was rarely troubled to make a save.
On 36 minutes Smart committed a foul, but as he picked himself up off the floor Charley Hearn appeared to butt the Boro player and was sent off with a straight red card.
Atkin attempted to set up Harding moments later but a fantastic effort by the Fisher defence saw the pass cut out and the ball shepherded back to Phillips to clear. On 39 minutes indecision in the heart of the Boro defence lead to Fishers best chance of the match. The ball fell to a Fisher striker with the goal at his mercy. His shot, however, was hurried and high over the Boro bar.
There were half-time substitutes for both sides but an early effort from Marc Pullan's head was cleared off the line by a Fisher defender and Ramsays pull back from the bye-line was crashed against the woodwork by Jay Lovett, both efforts in the 46th minute. The appearance was of a side hoping to finish the game early against the 10 men and Paul Armstrong cut inside to shoot but his effort was also saved by the excellent Nicholls. The Boro captain also attempted an audacious long range effort after dispossessing Anton Robinson. The long range effort was just wide of the mark unfortunately, with the Fisher keeper struggling to get back.
Fisher are an excellent side and even with 10 men they were always in the game. On 54 minutes a breaking midfield player was set-up from wide right but his effort was again high over the Boro bar. Nicholls was by far the busier of the keepers and was required to make several 2nd half saves from Lovett now playing in his familiar wide right position.
The last 15 minutes of the game saw Fisher controlling the ball but Pullan, Darren Baker, Ben Austin and Neil Jenkins were working hard to prevent shots and protect the lead. At the other end substitute Allan Tait was only denied a shooting opportunity by brave keeping. The referees whistle brought the game to an end with 3 added minutes but Boro through 1-0.
