Match Summary:- Boro traveled to Dorset for the 1st match of a run that will see the side through to the end of the season but playing 2 and even 3 games a week whilst completing their longest away trips.
Garry Wilson kept faith with the side that drew with Histon the previous week and on a bumpy pitch the visitors took the initiative in front of low attendance of 301. Scott Ramsay stole the ball from the last man in the 2nd minute but his cross from wide left was to close to Simon Evans who cut out the delivery to Allan Tait. Neil Jenkins was next to set up Tait with a clever run and pull back from the bye line after a quickly taken throw-in, but the shot was not clean and was past the far post. Tait turned provider with a nod down to Pat Harding but the Boro No.11's lobbed shot dropped just over the bar. Evans did his part for the visitors when a poor clearance was collected by Duncan McArthur. His pass to Ramsay allowed him to shoot from 35 yards but as the keeper retreated he managed to collect the on target effort. Boro's early dominance created an opportunity for Paul Armstrong on 9 minutes when Tait was upended on the 18 yard box. The captains well struck free-kick was low but inches past the right-hand post with wall and keeper motionless.
Dorchester finally emerged from their half after 10 minutes with a quick break from the lively Liam Cockerill but the danger was ended by Jenkins calmly clearing up field. The Magpies produced few clear cut chances but on 13 minutes a free-kick was not cleared and a fierce shot on target was blocked when heading goal wards, and later in the half Cockerill struck the Boro post when it appeared easier to score, the goal at his mercy.
Marc Pullan ventured forward several times in the match and on the half-hour mark fed the ball to Armstrong who again was inches away from opening the scoring.
In the 2nd half a shot from long range bent away from the Boro goal at the last minute and after 75 minutes The Magpies again threatened with 2 free-kick deliveries in quick succession. 7 minutes from time Tait slammed a fantastic effort after great control against the underside of Evans bar. Boro pushed for the winner in the closing stages, Wilde delivering an excellent cross just beyond Tait, a right wing cross from Austin was blocked on the ground by a Dorchester arm but the linesman ignored the appeals for a penalty, and Atkin showed great control but the final ball into the area was collected by a defender rather than Tait.
As the whistle blew the travelers from Sussex reflected on a match that saw extended periods of dominance over a side who appeared happy to clear the ball high and handsome to protect the back-four and keeper after a previous heavy home defeat and slow the game down whenever possible.
