Match Summary:- The Sports took the long journey home on Bank Holiday Monday empty handed after a difficult game against a useful Cambridge City side. Garry and Nick were forced to change the side after Saturday injuries to Jiri Dohnal and Matt Crabb, Duncan McArthur and Kevin Hemsley joining the starting line-ups.
The Lilywhites had the first opportunities to score before Victor Dolista had a long range shot wide of the target on 7 minutes. The balance of play, with Boro attacking up the City Grounds slope, was even in the 1st half and the away side produced several opportunities to score. Jay Lovett and Duncan McArthur both delivered excellent crosses across the Cambridge 6 yard box but the ball either eluded a yellow boot or not enough bodies were committed to the attack. Indeed the ball was in the home net from a Dolista header on 37 minutes but the referee had blown for a foul and the goal did not stand.
Neither side made changes at half-time and Jay Lovett had the first attempt on goal for the Boro but his shot from wide on the right was high over the bar. Victor Dolista almost broke through the strong home defence on 50 minutes but some last ditch defending prevented the big No 10 from getting his shot away. Cambridge began to apply pressure to the Boro goal and Lee Hook was called upon to make an excellent save after 63 minutes away to his left to deny a City header. However 3 minutes later the City No 10 was adjudged to have been fouled on the edge of the penalty area and the home side were awarded a penalty. Lynch stepped up, after heated and protracted Boro protests, and buried the ball firmly away to Lee Hooks left. Boro made several changes and pursued the equaliser. A Joe Keehan cross caused panic in the City box but no Sports striker could apply the finishing touch and a header off the line was required in the closing moments to prevent the scores being levelled. City always looked dangerous on the break and had a chance to further extend their lead at the death, but the game finished 1-0 to the hosts.
