Match Summary:-
Boro traveled to Essex hoping to rediscover the winning touch after last Saturdays F.A. Cup exit. Adam Wilde was handed a debut on the left and Matt Smart made a return to the midfield. Pat Harding was preferred as Scott Ramsays strike partner and with Darren Baker still recovering from a serious eye injury Ben Austin deputised at centre back with Marc Pullan.

Adam Wilde attempted to make an early impact on his first start with a looping shot in the 1st minute but the effort was gathered easily by The Iron keeper. Robbie Martin stood out for the home side all afternoon as a threat and he signaled his intentions as early as the 3rd minute with a pacy run at the Boro defence with a shot deflected out for a corner. It was Boro though that took the lead on 12 minutes. Jay Lovett delivered a perfect ball from the right into the path of Pat Harding breaking into the penalty area. Pat stretched to volley and the early strike fooled the keeper who was left stranded, The Sports 1 up. Jiri Dohnal was replaced after receiving a head injury from Ben Austin as he attempted to clear. Andy Atkin came on in midfield and Jay Lovett dropped to right back. Braintree thought they had equalised on 24 minutes as a right wing corner was buried past Lee Hook. The referee had spotted an infringement and the score line remained 1-0 Boro. Neil Jenkins and Adam Wilde were combining well on the left and a Jenkins cross was met by Paul Armstrong but his flick struck the bar with the keeper stranded. Martin again proved a threat to The Sports as his 30 yard freekick rattled Hookys bar on 28 minutes.

The 2nd half started with no changes made by either side and the 1st 20 minutes were even with neither side able to create an opening. After this opening period Pat Harding, who was having an excellent game, had several shots saved by Morgan. Marc Pullan was required to make an excellent tackle on 68 minutes as Braintree broke but Matt Smart surged into the home half and slipped the ball through to Scott Ramsay. Scott went around the keeper but was forced wide and his left foot effort from the bye line did not have the power to beat the covering defenders. Andy Atkin found himself free 35 yards out on 70 minutes and Jay Lovett was breaking down the right wing. Most expected Andy to play Jay in but he unleashed a fierce shot that required an excellent save, the ball punched over for a corner. Braintree equalised on 75 minutes when Martin delivered a disputed freekick into the Boro area and Baker met the ball to head past the stranded Lee Hook. Hoping to reclaim the lead Atkin kept the ball in wide right and he fired a ball into the 18 yard box. Pat Harding played a clever dummy but there was no supporting striker in the area, 1-1 the score remained.
