‘The Sports’ were still top of the league at the start of the day and remained so with Lewes facing a blank day due to the weather. The Easter weekend, however, did draw a blank with the side again losing, this time to a late penalty.

Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood made several changes from the home defeat .v. Bromley but the home side were fighting to avoid relegation and their desperation won the day with the game swinging from end to end. Boro pressured the home goal for the opening 15 minutes but Paul Armstrong and Andy Atkin both failed to test Jamie Turner. Welling broke up the hill on several occasions but Lee Hook did not have a save to make, the Welling back four required to block an Armstrong effort from 25 yards and Chris Moore denying Atkin a tap in after an excellent Neil Jenkins bye-line delivery.
Boro fans hoped for more from their side in the 2nd half but the hosts started the brighter. Michael Kamara and Sam Gargan called Hook into action but Ben Austin displayed fine control to chest and volley inches over on 51 minutes. Orlando Smith shot directly at Hook before Matt Crabb replaced Marc Pullan on 61 minutes. This change appeared to invigorate Boro and ‘Crabby’ started to get at the right-back and deliver his trademark corners; Atkin heading over on 63 minutes.

Another ‘looping’ Atkin header pulled a fantastic save from Turner on 65 minutes and Matt Smarts clever chip was also tipped over 5 minutes later. Boro continued to dominate with Atkin and Armstrong peppering the home goal but on 85 minutes the ‘sucker-punch’ arrived. Ellis Green jinxed across the 18 yard line to fall over an outstretched leg; the mass of ‘Wings’ congratulations possibly indicating the fortuitous nature of the award. Richard Carpenter placed the ball to Hooks left and the Boro stopper got a hand to the ball but the power carried it home for 1-0.
Boro toiled in the remaining moments but Sonny Cobbs almost provided a 2nd before the whistle finally blew. It has been said that there would be many twists and turns in the closing stages of the season as promotion, play-offs and relegation threatens. Boro will no doubt regroup and redouble their efforts in the remaining fixtures.
