Match Report:

Eastbourne Borough returned to league action .v. Sutton United. A home win at Priory Lane and the same result at Eastleigh would see The Sports top the league, and that was just how the day ended.
Boro were made to work hard for the 3-0 win and the match swung from end to end for the entire 90 minutes. Following an early Pat Harding effort Sutton had numerous chances to open the scoring with last ditch tackles from Darren Baker and Craig Watkins just a few inches off an excellent right-wing delivery keeping the home side in the game. When you are on top you must score and Sutton were to pay for their early wastefulness as on 28 minutes Andy Atkin cut the ball back from the bye line; the ball falling for Harding who’s 1st effort was blocked but the 2nd found the net for 1-0. The home side pushed home the advantage 2 minutes later when on the half-hour Atkin played a nice short pass into the path of Paul Armstrong. The Boro captain burst into the penalty area and finding himself all alone stroked the ball past Phil Wilson for the home sides 2nd.
Sutton started the 2nd half brightly with Lee Hook saving excellently from Craig Watkins, Baker again preventing McBean from striking the ball home and the woodwork coming to Boro’s aid as a looping header dropped onto the bar.
On 62 minutes Boro made 2 substitutions and Nathan Crabb provided a lovely ball to Atkin; Wilson making another wonderful save. On 71 minutes Boro scored their 3rd as Matt Smart finished at the 2nd attempt after a long run. Sutton appeared to give themselves a lifeline on 75 minutes but Hook saved the Craig Tanner penalty; Sutton heads understandably dropping as it appeared to just not be their day.
The 90 minutes played out with Boro opportunities to extend the lead through Atkin and Ben Austin but 3-0 remained the final score. Boro are top of the league, but Sutton played well enough to show they are willing to fight and play their way up the table.
