Boro strted the fixture hoping to continue to pressure Sussex rivals Lewes, ‘The Rooks’ with a tricky home fixture .v. Bishop’s Stortford. Scott Ramsay’s 2 goals midweek maintained his place in the starting 11; Nathan Crabb again starting on the bench for Boro. St Albans gave a debut to James Fisher at right-back, and although ultimately on the end of a 4 goal defeat the No. 2 had a fine game for his new side.
Eastbourne Borough had the wind on their backs in the 1st 45 minutes but found the strong wind and low winter sun made the flowing football displayed of late difficult to produce; passes astray, control difficult and shots on target too few and far between. Neil Jenkins should have tested Nick Eyre more on 13 minutes and skipper Lee Clarke looked most dangerous for the visitors but without testing Lee Hook unduly. Ramsay almost combined well with partner Andy Atkin but the cross was just beyond the big No.9’s reach. Then as the half ended James Quilter undid all the good work of the previous 45 minutes for the visitors when he received a straight red card for an elbow reducing the ‘Saints’ to 10 men.
Boro went straight onto the attack in the 2nd 45 and on 48 minutes Paul Armstrong (pictured left) was adjudged offside when firing home from close range after a Pat Harding cross. The skipper, however, had only moments to wait before scoring, finishing a low Matt Crabb (pictured below) cross for 1-0 from close range. Ramsay doubled the home sides advantage on 59 minutes as he started and finished an excellent move, again Matt Crabb crossing low for the No.10’s diving header.
Marc Pullan and Darren Baker snuffed out any St Albans adventure and in the last 10 minutes Boro rounded off the win with substitute Nathan Crabb scoring from an Atkin cross and Armstrong burying an 88th minute penalty for 4-0 as Matt Crabb was pulled down when about to fire home.
The home support drifted home eager for an update from The Dripping Pan, the pressure successfully applied. Lewes scored late to maintain their position at the top of the league but Boro now hold the superior goal difference. Whatever the twists and turns left this season it is proving to be a nail biting and intriguing season for East Sussex Blue Square South sides.
