Match Report:

Eastbourne Borough continued their strong start to the 2007/2008 season with the visit of Hassocks. Ethan Strevett was absent from the squad but the line-up was augmented by Danny Leach; the side playing an attacking formation, Danny partnered up front with Zac Attwood and Evan Archibald.
Boro started brightly with 3 opportunities in the 1st 3 minutes culminating in captain Chris Lamour’s strong drive just off target. Tim Johnson was instrumental in the opening exchanges and Leach provided an fine left-wing cross that Attwood met at the front post; his touch just wide. Hassocks were presented with a golden opportunity to take the lead on 13 minutes when a drop-kick from the keeper was allowed to bounce by Larmour and Dean Brooks. The height caught the pair unawares and mark Sheriff’s attempted looping header was easily saved by Ollie Barton. Attwood was proving to be a real handful for the Hassocks back-four but on 19 minutes H McCarthy smashed a pile driver of an effort against the visitors left-hand post from 25 yards. Evan Archibald made a fabulous run on to a left-wing corner but his glancing header was inches wide of the far post. On 30 minutes the 1st of 3 goals in 5 minutes arrived. Eastbourne Borough broke from deep. Attwood found Leach wide right who cut inside to finish cooly past Jack Simpson for 1-0. Archibald headed home from close range on 33 minutes and Leach grabbed his 2nd 2 minutes later.
Despite this burst of goal scoring activity the visitors kept plugging away, Sheriff especially difficult to handle. On 47 minutes The Sports made it 4-0 when Archibald finished low past Simpson after more excellent work by Attwood. Leach nearly claimed a hat-trick on 52 minutes but this time Simpson turned the ball round the post. Attwood was keen to get on the score sheet himself and saw his effort inches wide of the near post on 64 minutes when a delivery across to an unmarked Leach may have been the better option. Zac was given the best his best chance on 69 minutes when Leach was upended by Simpson for a penalty. Unfortunately for Boro and Attwood the low shot was saved by Simpson to his left.
On 74 minutes the Hassocks fight-back began in earnest. A disputed throw was awarrded to the visitors and as the home side struggled to organise a right-wing delivery was poked home by James Laing past Nick Maynard for 4-1. Moments later Joe Fernley poked the ball past the Boro keeper after his defence failed to clear their lines and 2 minutes later he popped up again to finish high into the net for 4-3. With Dean Brooks barking orders from the back a level of calm was achieved and Ben Hughes was unlucky not to give Boro a 2 goal cushion when Simpson turned his long-range effort over the bar on 82 minutes.
Finally the referee called a halt to proceedings and the 100 + crowd left having witnessed an entertaining match with the home side coming out on top of a 7 goal ‘thriller’, The Sports topping the table with 15 points.
