Match Report:

|
Eastbourne Borough travelled to Fisher Athletic having dropped to 2nd in the Blue Square South after a midweek draw at home to Newport County; Sussex rivals Lewes topping the table after a win at Bishop’s Stortford. Pat Harding was given the No.11 shirt with Matt Crabb dropping to the bench, Darren Budd returning to the squad after England Futsal duty. Fisher included new signing Scott Gooding at centre-back and although he had a fine game his debut was to end in a resounding defeat.
‘The Fish’ had not won in the league since early October but the opening exchanges did not present the home side as a team short on confidence or ability. Gilbert Nuako shot straight at Lee Hook after only 2 minutes as the visitors were placed under early pressure. A defensive reshuffle was required after only 11 minutes as Neil Jenkins was replaced by Matt Crabb and only 3 minutes later Fisher were given a golden opportunity to open the scoring with a penalty. Wesley Thomas struck his shot low to Hooks left but the Boro keeper guessed correctly and clawed the ball out to keep the scores level. Thomas was proving a real handful but Hook was again to deny the No. 11 as a deflected ball found the winger but his effort was direct at the keeper.
Boro were forced into a further change as Andy Atkin replaced Scott Ramsay but as the side again settled after the enforced changes the players who were being forced into errors by a hard working home side began to be more productive. Matt Crabb nodded a ball goalwards as Simon Overland missed a punch only for Gooding to clear off the line. On 34 minutes Borough took the lead. Matt Crabb challenged just inside the penalty area and was fouled. The referee put the whistle to his mouth for a penalty but allowed the game to go on. The ball fell to Pat Harding and his 1st shot was saved well by Overland, the 2nd shot however beat the keeper and all defenders in the crowded box for 1-0 Boro. Allan Tait almost doubled the lead on 37 minutes but his shot was just wide and he provided an excellent cross for Atkin a minute later but The Sports went in at half time with a single goal lead.
The half time break saw Boro transformed into a slick passing side as the team produced some wonderful football in the 2nd 45 minutes to score 3 and put the shaky start to the fixture to bed. The 2nd goal came on 56 minutes as Tait curled a shot from just inside the right-hand corner of the penalty area in off the far post. Fisher drew a fantastic double save from Hook on the hour but the hosts were to contribute to their own downfall as Gavin Dayes missed a clear header on 74 minutes and was sent off for a 2nd yellow a minute later. Pat Harding almost scored his 2nd of the game; his low shot was just wide of the far post, but Tait fired past Overland from distance for his 2nd on 79 minutes. In the closing moments the hosts were reduced to 9 men as captain Hickie received his 2nd yellow following a melee, Austin also receiving a caution. Matt Crabb rounded off a fine performance in time added on with a 25 yard free-kick into the top left-hand corner of the net for 4-0.
