Match Report:

Eastbourne Borough took a break from the Blue Square South and hoped to consign last season’s early exit at Haverhill to history with a victory over Edgware Town. Loan signing Jamie Day started the game with Matt Crabb on the bench nursing a foot injury from the away draw at Hayes & Yeading United.

Boro started brightly with a Neil Jenkins long range effort just wide of Darren Bonfields left hand post but Edgware Town looked to upset the hosts, an early effort of their own deflected and looped up into Lee Hooks grateful arms. The sides traded efforts on goal for the 1st quarter of an hour before what appeared a soft penalty decision gave ‘The Wares’ the chance to take the lead. Hook dived whilst the shot from Densil Davidson was straight down the middle. However the height was wrong and the ball smashed against the bar; Boro fans heaving a sigh of relief. Day was proving to be influential with some neat passes but his right-wing corner; not cleared by Edgware, allowed Matt Smart to head home from close range for the opening Boro score on 22 minutes. Jason Fernee left the field on 29 minutes with a head injury, but his team mates created several half-chances for an equaliser during the remainder of the half, poor finishing and strong defending keeping the score at 1-0.

‘The Sports’ started the 2nd half with renewed purpose and Junior Lewis was forced into a last ditch tackle on Smart; Bonfield also saving bravely at Andy Atkins feet. The 2nd Boro goal eventually came on 54 minutes as Day delivered another fine free-kick for Jay Lovett to head home un-challenged at the far post; 2-0 Boro.

Danny Leach was given half-an-hour and his direct runs allowed Boro to begin to dominate territory. Edgware, however, never gave up the game and Maharajan had a couple of chances to pull a goal back on 65 minutes; Hook again not severely tested. Scott Ramsay had a penalty appeal for hand-ball turned down and looped a back-post header just over the bar but in truth the Boro performance was efficient rather than exhilarating, progression into the next round comfortably accomplished.
