Match Report:

Eastbourne Borough entertained Crawley Town in the Setanta Shield hoping for their 1st victory over Conference Premier opposition. Despite dominating the 2nd 45 minutes a double from ‘Red Devils’ striker Jamie Cook would see the day end in defeat again for ‘The Sports’.
Boro started brightly with Andy Atkin springing the visitors offside trap but could not evade the pursuing defenders. Crawley settled and edged the 1st half for possession and territory. Lee Hook was forced into a couple of saves, turning a low long range effort round the post on 14 minutes and an excellent point blank reaction save on 33. The half ended with 2 half chances for Atkin; the 1st a strike high and wide and on the whistle a shout for a free-kick/penalty as ‘fouled’ on the edge of the box; Mr Yeo waving away appeals from players, supporters and bench alike.
Eastbourne Borough were without doubt the better side for the majority of the 2nd half but Lee Hook earned his M-O-M nomination with a fantastic double save on 47 minutes, but was powerless to prevent the visitors taking the lead with a well placed Cook header on 49 minutes.
Adam Wilde tested Ashley Bayes on 62 minutes; the keeper reacting well to block a low shot and on 63 minutes fresh impetus was added to the home side as Matt Crabb and Matt Smart joined the fray. Atkin received a short cross from Paul Armstrong and worked his way to the edge of the 6 yard box. With the goal and keeper at his mercy again to most in the crowd the Boro No. 9 was fouled as he crashed to the ground; the ‘man in black’ again unmoved and the chance was gone. On 75 minutes Atkin eventually got his just rewards. A Bayes mistake allowed Atkin to roll the ball home and with the all the possession it looked like there would only be one eventual winner.
Bayes made amends for his error with a wonderful reaction save from Atkins flick on 77 minutes but the sucker punch came on 89 minutes. Cook flicked on to Pierre Joseph-Dubois who appeared 2 yards offside. Cook made a clever run into a central position and his partner squared the ball to him with just Hook to beat. The Boro keeper did his best to keep his side in the tie with a fine save. The 2nd effort was blocked by a covering defender but Cook eventually finished well, high into the net for 2-1 and his side in the hat for the next round.
