Match Report:

Boro started today’s fixture at the top of the Blue Square South and despite only the 3rd league defeat of the campaign remained so with rivals Lewes not playing until Sunday lunch-time.

Cambridge City Home 160208 Crop

‘The Sports’ played the 1st 45 minutes with the wind and after some bright and attractive football in the 1st 15 minutes that saw MOM Paul Armstrong shoot narrowly wide the weather conditions started to get the better of the football for both sides. Michael Gash struck the Boro post on 29 minutes as Boro failed to clear and strike partnership Scott Ramsay and Andy Atkin latches on to 2 long clearances that deceived ‘The Lillywhites’ back four within minutes of each other but both lifted their efforts over the bar. As the half drew to a close Matt Crabb curled a shot from 25 yards onto the post; Ramsay beaten to the rebound by a retreating back four.

Boro started the 2nd half well and on 56 minutes Boro found the woodwork again. Armstrong’s measured curling effort left all flat-footed and again the rebound was kind for the visitors. Jay Lovett’s cross from the bye-line evaded all in the box but the ball eventually reached Atkin on the rise; the No. 9 lifting the ball over the bar from close range. The sucker punch was landed on 69 minutes. A right wing free-kick was delivered behind the back-line and captain Dave Theobald’s diving header beating Lee Hook for 1-0 City.

Matt Crabb delivered a series of crosses into the Cambridge area but again no finish was applied and Hook saved well from Ashley Fuller on 78 minutes but despite continued pressure Timms was not called into meaningful action.
