Match Report:

Eastbourne Borough looked to continue their unbeaten run with a long-distance midweek trip to Cambridge City. Milton Road, the scene of a glorious play-off victory in the past, has proven to be a difficult trip in recent times and it took a late goal from Nathan Crabb for ‘The Sports’ to leave Cambridgeshire with a point.

Cambridge have always played attractive football but the side lined up with 5 across the back, and for most of the game the entire defence were steadfastly behind the ball. That said the home side started brightly with a succession of corners in the 1st 5 minutes but it took a moment of indecision at the back for ‘The Lilywhites’ to take the lead; Gash lobbing the ball into an empty net on 7 minutes. Boro attempted to level through Pat Harding’s head, an excellent effort from Scott Ramsay that Shane Herbert tipped over, and Andy Atkin just dragging a shot wide on a couple of occasions. But the goal just would not come and Lee Roache made the Boro back 4 work hard to keep the deficit to a single goal.

The 2nd half saw Stuart Wall miss the Boro net with a free-header early on but after this early scare and an excellent Lee Hook save from a right-wing free-kick the half belonged almost entirely to the visitors. ‘The Sports’ pushed City deep into their own half with Ramsay striking the side netting, Ben Austin just failing to connect from a Matt Crabb corner before with 6 minutes remaining the lively Nathan Crabb beat his marker for pace as a ball was lifted over the City defence, and volleyed home past the motionless Herbert. Boro then pushed for a winner; Austin and Darren Budd combing to send a series of crosses into the 18 yard box but as the whistle blew for the 90 minutes ‘The Sports’ had again demonstrated the spirit to defend their unbeaten record, a point enough to keep them at the summit of the table as an FA Cup weekend beckoned.
