Match Summary:- Boro returned home from Hertfordshire empty handed after dominating much of the game.
Bishop's Stortford have started the season strongly so this was always likely to be a stern test for The Sports. The early exchanges backed this up with The Blues creating opportunities to score within the first 20 minutes. On 8 minutes a right wing cross was headed over the bar but only 2 minutes later the home side should have taken the lead. Lee Hook saved well from a 1 on 1 but the ball spilled over his body and required a Sports defender to clear the ball off the line. This was followed immediately with another fine Hook save, advancing to dive at the strikers feet.
After weathering these early threats Boro began to play and create opportunities. Wide right Scott Ramsay and Allan Tait combined well and Ramsay delivered a ball across goal to the far post. Unfortunately the ball eluded Matt Smart as well as the excellent Stortford keeper. Boro created several opportunities over the next 15 minutes but the killer touch could not be found. Ramsay setup smart with a nice lay off but the shot was deflected and the keeper held easily. Jay Lovett delivered an excellent cross that was aimed direct at Allan Tait's head. Strong defending by The Blues allowed the home side to just reach the ball before the Boro No.10. A worked freekick then allowed McArthur to shoot high and wide after 23 minutes and 5 minutes later a quickly taken freekick left Tait on his own at the bye-line and his cross-come-shot was gathered by the keeper.
The home sides response to this period of away pressure was swift and proved decisive. The Blues strikers combined to allow Lockett a clear shot that Hooky was unable to save, 1-0 Stortford.
Boro responded well with Scott Ramsay providing half chances for Jay Lovett and Allan Tait but the half-time score remained 1-0 to the home side.
Neither side made changes at half-time but Garry and Nick made positive changes early in the half with Joe Keehan and Victor Dolista, his debut, making appearances.
Jay Lovett attempted to level the score with a lobbed shot that dropped just over the home bar and he also provided an excellent right wing cross that the home side struggled to defend. Victor has shown strength and a sure touch on his debut and he showed good ability after 70 minutes when he worked a great opportunity for himself in the 18 yard box but his powerful shot was high and wide. After 72 minutes Joe Keehan provided a deep cross that troubled the home keeper and as he attempted to clear he only managed to push the ball onto the bar. Luckily for The Blues the ball continued out for a corner.
32 minutes into the 2nd half Boro had a penalty shout turned down. A deep cross from the right was delivered into a crowded penalty area. As players challenged for the cross a Bishop's Stortford defender rose with his hand above his head. The ball appeared to strike his raised hand and away from goal but the referee waved away loud player and supporter appeals.
As Boro pushed for the equaliser in the last 5 minutes Bishop's Stortford broke quickly but shot weakly and even had a penalty appeal of their own turned down. The game finished with 4 minutes of added time and Boro left the field to reflect on a game they dominated for long periods but simply failed to score.
