Match Summary:-
Eastbourne Borough traveled to ambitions AFC Hornchurch for their 4th pre-season friendly on Saturday 29th July. AFC Hornchurch are preparing for a season in the Rymans League after a hugely successful Essex Senior League campaign last season. The club set-up emphasises the ambition to return to Nationwide Conference football and ex Thurrock manager Colin McBride is assembling a squad of players that it is hoped will provide a strong challenge for the Rymans Division 1 North title. With injuries and holidays still playing a part in the seasons preparations Boro used the opportunity to field 2 Czech triallists, Jiri Dohnal and Victor Dolista, who had earned their chance with strong displays in training.Jiri and Hooky v Hornchurch 302

The first 5 minutes saw The Urchins start brightly and although Lee Hook was not called upon to make a save the home side flashed a couple of shots just wide of the mark. Boro gradually worked their way into the game and Matt Crabb and Pat Harding combined well for Pat Harding to drive just wide of the Hornchurch goal. The visitors took the lead on 8 minutes when Paul Armstrong finished off an excellent flowing move. The Sports then began to dominate and the lead was almost extended on 29 minutes when the home keeper pulled off a fine save to deny Matt Crabb's goal bound freekick. With half-time beckoning Pat Harding, with a perfectly timed run, latched onto a finely weighted through ball and slotted home, low past the advancing keeper. Victor v Hornchurch 302

The second half started as the first finished with Boro pushing to extend their lead. Kevin Hemsley and Pat Harding both had half chances that were wide of the mark or safely gathered by the Hornchurch keeper. The usual pre-season mass substitutions then broke up both Boro's and the games rhythm but the visitors still managed to craft several chances before Marc Pullan was adjudged to have pushed Dave Sadler in the 18yard box and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Sadler took the penalty himself and cooly fired past Lee Hook. AFC Hornchurch appeared to sense there was more for them in the remaining minutes and almost scored in a goal mouth scramble only for 'Hooky' to deny the home side but concede a corner. The corner was swung to the near post and Billy Holland rose first to equalise and earn the draw.Pat and Scott v Hornchurch 3
