Wiltshire was sunny and
welcoming, if a little windy, as Boro faced 'The Whites'
for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. The bruising Sussex Senior
Cup tie .v. Shoreham the previous Monday and with an eye
on a hectic 10 days to come the squad was 'rotated', most
notably Allan Tait making a starting appearance up front.
The hosts started with the wind on their backs and Charlie
Griffin drew an early save from Lee Hook. Jay Lovett slipped
an accurate through ball to Tait but the touch was just
too heavy, the ball running to a goal-kick. On the quarter-hour
Hook's lightening reactions kept a point blank effort
from Darrell Clarke out. Boro's injury list increased
on 18 minutes as Sam Gargan was replaced by Simon Wormull
and as the half drew to a close he was unlucky to strike
inches wide cutting in from the right-wing.
With the wind now in their favour Boro started the 2nd
45 brightly and an inch perfect ball from 'Worms' allowed
Tait through 1-on-1 with James Bittner. Electing to round
the keeper tait wa driven wide and with defenders recovering
he fed the ball back only for Paul Armstrong to shoot
high under pressure. Wormull's flicked header from a right-wing
free-kick was again just inches wide before on 70 minutes
the home side took the lead. Their 1st real moment of
quality saw an excellent right-wing cross that Brain Dutton
met with a thumping header to leave Hook with no chance
- 1-0 City.
'The Sports' made changes but in the 89th minutes sub
Charles Ademeno broke away and slipped the ball low past
Hook for 2-0.
The traveling Boro fans made their way home with the jubilant
home fans in their ears. As the miles slipped by on the
journey back to Sussex several may have decided that the
score line did not adequately reflect the game. Boro had
2 fine chances and another late, late goal was harsh.
The side now face a punishing schedule and more rotation
appears likely as further points are sought in this our
1st Blue Square Premier season.
