Borough recorded their fourth win in five games to collect three valuable points at the Marston Arena.
A goal in each half from Paul Armstrong and substitute Allan Tait gave Borough the spoils in a game where the points were important to both sides. And it could have been victory by a greater margin had referee Bond not disallowed Ben Austin’s second half header, much to the surprise of onlookers.
Pat Harding shot over the bar in the fourth minute and a Karleigh Osborne throughball required a last ditch tackle with Nathan Crabb about to shoot.
Northwich responded with Jonny Allan firing high….and Neil Jenkins did well to head clear from the goal-line on sixteen minutes from a home corner.
Borough’s dominance was rewarded on 27 minutes when Armstrong volleyed home from the edge of the area across goalkeeper Michael Jones…to give Borough the lead.
Although Borough retained the majority of possession, the home side were not without chances. Matty Crowell, later to be sent off for two yellow cards (77 mins), sent in a shot that went wide of Lee Hook’s right hand post.
Borough finished the half brightly with Nathan Crabb narrowly beaten to the ball by keeper Jones.
Northwich came out in determined fashion for the second period, with Allan slicing the ball wide from six yards….but on 53 minutes Aaron Burns slotted the ball home from close range following a left flank cross.
On 55 mins Armstrong was scythed down and stretchered from the pitch, to be replaced by Simon Wormull.
From the free-kick, Ben Austin appeared to have regained the lead for the visitors, but his headers was mysteriously ruled out for handball..identified by the assistant referee.
Following Crowell’s dismissal, Allan Tait replaced Nathan Crabb….and within five minutes Tait had given his side the lead. A move involving Jenkins, Wormull and Atkin saw Tait sent free to finish coolly under the advancing keeper.
Borough pressed home their numerical advantage with Atkin striking the bar from an acute angle in time added on……and there was still time for a Tait shot to brush the post.
As the final whistle blew their was jubilation amongst the travelling fans, in recognition of a controlled and professional performance.
Manager Garry Wilson praised his team for a battling display, "It was pleasing to see the players stand up to a physical Northwich threat and get back to winning ways on the road. We took our goals well and were unfortunate not to get a third. A positive display which puts the squad in good spirit for the forthcoming FA cup tie.”
