Grays Athletic had never beaten Eastbourne Borough, and many traveling to Essex for this 2nd fixture in 3 days, were eagerly looking for positive signs. The 2 previous fixtures in the season had seen 3 goal deficits; somewhat harshly; and a clean sheet was hoped for as a platform on which to build. Injury doubts for Andy Atkin and Allan Tait were groundless although Tait dropped to the bench; Mo Harkin unfortunately not fit to make the squad.

The clean sheet was under immediate threat as Lee Hook saved well in the opening minute before he faced recent 'returnee' Stuart Thurgood from the spot on 10 minutes; Neil Jenkins diving blocked adjudged a late tackle. The ex-England skippers effort was saved by 'Hooky' and maybe contributed to some confidence in the Boro ranks. Atkin and Jean-Michel Sigere both tested Ross Flitney; Jamie Taylor lobbing wide of the Boro goal on 22 minutes. Ban Austin's superb 'hook' off the head of Stefan Bailey helped keep the scores level but Boro would look back on a 1st 45 where they had possibly allowed the home side too much time on the ball.

The opening exchanges on the 2nd half saw the game swing from end to end with no goal threatened unduly; Grays delivering dangerous balls across the box but no player willing or able to apply a finish. Tait was introduced just after the hour and the match began to inch Boro's way. Tait drew a block from the Grays back line from a Paul Armstrong free-kick before Nathan Crabb became his strike partner; Atkin forced to leave the pitch injured after a 'rugby' tackle on 69 minutes, no card issued (reticence dispensed with - a rash of 5 cards in the last 5 minutes!).

The fresh legs across the park boosted Boro and the side began to force the pace of the game. Matt Crabb had a shot saved but for the 2nd time in the game a Grays player was faced with only Hook to beat. Sub Craig Reid controlled a ball inside the penalty area but rather than fire home his lob was grabbed by Hook high. As Boro cleared their lines the home side conceded a free-kick wide right. Matt Crabb delivered a wonderfully flighted ball into the box; Flitney didn't claim and Matt Smart's glancing header settled into the bottom corner; the 100+ Boro fans were jubilant and a fair proportion of the small home crowd made for the doors.

Boro held firm for the remaining minute + 5 of 'time added' but Matt Crabb received his 2nd yellow challenging for a loose ball before Mr Fletcher called a halt to proceedings. It was very much a feeling of mission accomplished. A clean sheet achieved and again a full-time side were matched across 90 minutes. Just when the side needed it the hard work was rewarded and another 3 points were in the bag .... not a bad end to a Bank Holiday.
