An extra-time Andy Atkin winner sent Borough into the third round of the Setanta Shield with a 3-2 victory over Fisher Athletic at the Champion Hill Stadium on Tuesday night. 2-0 up with 80 minutes on the clock Borough were stunned by two Fisher goals in three minutes and 2-2 forced extra-time - something Borough could have done without but needed to save their blushes. Atkin with his fifth goal of the season got the winner on 99 minutes, deftly guiding a header into the corner of the net from a fine Darren Budd cross.
As expected Garry Wilson shuffled his squad for the trip to the Blue Square South side who have lost their manager and three players to Grays in the last week and are facing mounting off the field problems. Keeper Chris Winterton and defender Pat Sappleton were given competitive debuts. Budd, Andy Ballard, Nathan Crabb, Mo Harkin, Simon Wormull and Pat Harding all started. Matt Smart missed the game serving his one match ban for five cautions - making him available for the away day at Weymouth on Saturday. It was to prove a night of mixed fortunes for Sappleton who headed Borough"s second and what most thought would be Borough"s win sealing goal and then had the misfortune to deflect a Fisher corner into his own net to level the scores!
Borough dominated the first half but only had a Wormull strike to show for their efforts. Harkin had two chances that went narrowly wide. Borough made it 1-0 in the 2nd minute. Harkin put in Allan Tait and his shot produced a fine one handed save by Fisher keeper Simon Overland only for Wormull to slot the rebound into the net. Winter was only called upon to make one save in the entire first half pushing away a strike from Karl Beckford. Williams-Hall broke through on 40 minutes and with only the rapidly advancing Winterton to beat shot wide. On the stroke of half time Nathan Crabb saw his goal-bound effort cleared off the line. 67 minutes and Sappleton powered a header from a corner over the bar and 4 minutes later he again rose above the Fisher defence to head Borough into a 2-0 lead.
81 minutes Jordan Kaffin - five minutes after coming on as a substitute - totally against the run of play gave Fisher a lifeline by applying the finishing touch a slick six pass move. And it became a total nightmare for Borough three minutes later when a Ken Beaney free kick, hit with pace into the box, was deflected off the unfortunate Sappleton into his own net. 2-2 and suddently Borough were on the back-foot and Fisher looked the more likely to grab a late winner.
2-2 at full-time and some no punches pulled words from Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood. Extra time and Andy Atkin - on as a substitute after 55 minutes when Nathan Crabb went off injured - wasted two chances but on 99 minutes he made no mistake with a glancing header from a Budd corner.
Job done, banana skin avoided but Borough could so easily have been punished for those 10 minutes that let Fisher back in the game. Having dominated for most of 110 minutes out of two hours Borough just deserved to go through but they certainly made it much harder for themselves than what it should have been!
