Borough returned to yet another key venue in the clubs history,
the Kassam Stadium Oxford, following on from Tuesdays win
at Broadhall Way. Many pundits had tipped Boro as 'difficult
to beat' this season and despite the score line many who
were at the game would agree that this may still be true.
Oxford had endured a problematic start to the season and
were looking to get points on the board; Yemi Odubade looking
to impress against his old club. Boro were hoping to maintain
an excellent start to their campaign and continue to accumulate
the points the standard of play deserved. Whatever the hopes
and fears of the 3969 as they arrived not many would predict
what was about to unfold.
The 'Yellows' in the crowd could hardly have wished for
a better start as after not scoring in 180 minutes of league
football went 2 up after only 6minutes. Lee Hook saved a
close range effort only for James Constable to fire home
the rebound for the 1st, but Hook was left with no chance
for the 2nd as Levi Reid curled a fine shot from the edge
of the 18 yard box into the far corner.
Boro fans did not have long to wait for a response as an
Allan Tait effort came back off the bar for Pat Harding
to finish. The Boro comeback was complete on 16 minutes
when some excellent approach play saw Paul Armstrong square
for Tait who finished low into the bottom left-hand corner
for 2-2.

Minutes later Boro had an opportunity to go ahead. Tait
was set away with only the keeper to beat but a fine effort
and defensive tackle prevented the shot from getting away.
Boro were firmly on top and only further stretched defending
prevented Andy Atkin for striking for home and Paul Armstrong's
long range effort struck the upright on 34 minutes. As 'The
Sports' looked to the half-time whistle at level pegging
Yemi forced a Marc Pullan OG. The ex Boro players right-wing
delivery was headed against 'Pullers' by Ben Austin trying
to clear for a corner and the ball rolled tamely into the
visitors net for 3-2.
After a breathless 1st 45 many may have expected a a lower
key 2nd half. The players had no such thoughts. Boro had
an early chance with Tait just inches wide. Oxford's front
line were playing well and substitute Eddie Hutchinson was
unlucky not to extend the home lead on 53 minutes; his header
direct at Hook. Armstrong had a fantastic match for Boro
and he converted a Neil Jenkins left-wing delivery to equaliser
3-3. Boro had worked hard for parity but it was not to last
long. A right-wing cross has headed goal-ward; 'Hooky' again
saving the 1st effort but Hutchinson finished for the lead.
Boro searched for another leveler but the 3 games in the
opening 8 days had begun to tell on Boro legs and Yemi's
pace down the left and cut-back behind Darren Baker found
Constable who shot high into the net for his 2nd and Oxford's
5th.
Nathan Crabb and Simon Wormull entered the fray as the side
searched for goals but it was not to be and Barry Quinn
headed powerfully home a left-wing corner late in the game
for his sides final score.
It could be said that it's difficult to be positive when
reporting a 6-3 defeat. However most Boro fans on leaving
the ground could see the positives. The club have scored
6 goals in their opening 3 fixtures .v. what many believe
to be leading clubs in the division and are most certainly
full time outfits. The side have competed in every fixture
and in this match fought back from the dead; ultimately
beaten by a side increasing in confidence when the miles
and effort began to tell on limbs and minds. It is hoped
that management and players alike can rest with no midweek
fixture and face another leading club this Saturday; Cambridge
United; with the same skill and determination.
